About

I’m Russ Rowlands. In early 2016 I left my stable job in downtown Toronto to make my way around the world the slow way, by sails and rails.  To date (updated August, 2017) I’ve traveled 12,000 km by sailboat and 20,000 km by train, covering the Pacific, Caribbean, Europe and Asia.  It’s a big world and the hardest part is choosing where to go next.

I was a happy boy before I left Toronto, but this adventure is about more than just getting through life without complaining. I used to spend too much of my allotted time waiting – usually for Fridays – and one day I looked up and I was in my mid-30s and had no idea what I wanted.  If I wasn’t working towards a big house or to support a family or to buy a fancy car, what was I spending all those hours on?

If you woke up every day with $100 on your bedside table, in a currency that would be 100% useless tomorrow, what would you do with it? You can’t save it. You can’t save your days either – you can only either spend them or waste them.  I’m trying to do the former.
