a Charter of Days

I have writers’ block.  With regard to this blog, at least.  I’ve been home for a month and a half and haven’t been able to write anything here, and it’s making me a little crazy.  In that time I’ve had three articles published over at Roads & Kingdoms, as well as started to produce content for the sailing website I’ll be contributing to come January (details to follow).  I’m loving all this wordcraft, but keep bashing my head against my next post here.  Wtf yo.

So, since the only way to get better at something is to fucking do it, I’ve decided to promise to write something here every week.  I don’t make many promises, because I’m notoriously flaky, but when I do, I’m pretty good at standing by them.  Barring tech failures and/or a lack of internet connection (which, to be fair, is totally possible once I’m back at sea), I’ll put something new up here every week or you can punch me in the junk.  Fact.

I think part of the problem is that I’ve set myself up.  I’ve written these 2,000 word narratives about epic adventures and crazy shit that happened.  I really enjoy telling long-form stories like that, but it backs me into a corner when all I have to talk about is some shallow tomfoolery or meaningless shenanigans.  Not to necessarily say that people enjoy long stories more than 500 word brainfarts, but I’ve established a precedent and have become reluctant to break it.  So I’m breaking it.  This post is officially about nothing funny whatsoever, and I hold out no promises as to the next.  But at least, the next will come within the week.  And the next after that, and the next after that.

There’s two good ideas on deck that I hope y’all will enjoy.  First, I’m almost done catching up on all my maps for the next release of my travel-journal-map book (here’s the first, in case you missed it).  Second, I’m trying to edit together and annotate my favourite photos from the past year of adventures.  I woke up at 4am this morning for some reason (ya, I’m old) and had a blast digging back through the thousands of pictures I have from my travels.  They gotta be modified to upload (for size, mostly) which is a pain in the ass process, but I’ll have them up here before year end.

Finally, I just gotta say, being home has been amazing.  It’s be great to spend time with the friends & fam, and being back in Ontario for the  holidays is a real treat.  I even missed snow, believe it or not.  In January, I’m heading south to help sail a boat from Miami to Trinidad, so my adventures are far from over… but I want to thank everyone who has made time for me while I’ve been home.  Batteries charged. Time to get the fuck back out there. #adventuretime!
